Canon EOS 500D
Tell both sides of the story with Full HD movies
The EOS 500D sets your creativity free and lets you bring every side of your story to life with a choice of stunning 15.1 Megapixel resolution photos or pin-sharp Full High Definition video. Driven by the powerful DIGIC 4 processor this highly-featured model delivers many of the technologies developed for our professional models and matches them with intuitive design and controls so they are easy to access and apply. With High ISO, built-in flash, 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor and Live View Function the EOS 500D is ideal for taking superb shots and shooting great stories.

A powerful combination
The EOS 500D's 15.1 MP CMOS sensor performs outstandingly in low light and produces images with incredibly low noise. Canon's DIGIC 4 processor works alongside the sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradations and natural looking colours, as well as split-second startup times and near-instant image review after shooting. DIGIC 4's advanced Noise Reduction when shooting at higher ISO speeds enables the EOS 500D to offer a high ISO range of up to 3200 - expandable to 12800 - so you can shoot in low light without the need for flash.

With continuous shooting up to 3.4 frames per second in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs or 9 RAW files it is easy to capture dramatic action shots and it captures enough detail to print to A2 size even with cropped images.

Connect to your HD television using the
HDMI cable for instant HD playback.

Movie making
With the EOS 500D you can really get creative and bring your images to life with the ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) video. You can also choose to shoot at 720p or VGA resolution when larger amounts of footage need to be stored on a memory card. Viewing and sharing your movies and stills is easy too thanks to an HDMI connection, which allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.

Unlock your creativity
The EOS 500D has five Creative Modes to explore:

Av mode automatically sets the shutter speed, but allows you to control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture. By setting the extent to which the lens opens or 'aperture', you can control the portion of a scene that appears sharp in the image or 'depth of field'. A larger aperture will provide a shallow depth of field - sharp in the foreground with a blurred background - where as a smaller aperture will give a sharp picture throughout.

The different modes allow you to control
the look and feel of your images

Tv mode automatically sets the aperture and you select the shutter speed. This enables you to change the appearance of motion in your shots; Photograph a waterfall with a fast shutter speed and every droplet is captured in crisp detail: use a slower shutter speed and you will create a soft blurred effect, giving a sense of motion in your photograph.

In Program Mode both the aperture and shutter speed are controlled by the camera but you can select other settings: With Drive Mode you can select from Single Shot, Continuous Shooting or Self-timer; Metering Mode allows you to specify the area of the image you wish the camera to use to calculate exposure; White Balance setting means you can determine what the camera reads as white to allow for your specific lighting conditions; and Flash Mode gives you control over your flash settings.

Manual Mode allows you to control both aperture and shutter speed so you have total creative freedom with your shots. Great for difficult lighting situations or capturing subjects with different effects.

The ergonomically designed dial gives you
easy access to the 14 modes

A-DEP Mode automatically sets your depth of field so you can be sure to capture as much or as little of the scene as you wish in focus.

All the Creative Modes allow you to change your ISO speed. This is the measure of the sensor's sensitivity to light. Altering it allows you to modify the exposure accordingly and gives you more freedom to be creative with your shots in different lighting conditions.

For those times when you prefer to concentrate on great composition the EOS 500D also offers several Basic Modes, which control all the settings. These include; Full Auto, which allows you to use the camera to 'point and shoot'; Portrait, which ensures the background is out of focus and the foreground is pin sharp; Landscape, which sets a longer exposure and a smaller aperture to capture both the foreground and background in focus, Close-up which allows you to focus on very close objects; Sports, which uses a fast shutter speed to freeze action; and Night Portrait, which increases the ISO to make the camera more sensitive to light. You can also prevent the built-in flash from popping up using the Flash Off setting (for shooting in Museums and galleries).

The EOS 500D has all functions within easy
reach, next to the 3-inch Clear View LCD screen

Effortless operation
Weighing just 480g, the EOS 500D is ergonomically designed for comfortable handling. A large, bright 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor with ultra-high 920,000 pixel resolution, a viewing angle of 170 degrees and dual anti-reflection coatings makes it easy to preview, review and share your shots even when you are using the camera in bright sunlight.

This model is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards. Available in increasingly large capacities these provide an inexpensive way to extend the cameras capacity.

Live View Function
Live View is a real-time visual feed, which enables you to view your subjects directly on the LCD monitor, a great help when shooting from awkward angles. It's easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight. Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through a USB connection, and the included EOS Utility software.

In Live View Function you can action two Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, which uses the camera's standard AF system (great for capturing action or for shooting in low light) and Live mode, which is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and can be overridden by pressing the AF mode selection button. The target area for Live Mode AF is at the center by default, but it can be moved around most of the picture area with the cross keys on the back of the camera.

Focusing made easy
A wide-area Auto Focus (AF) system uses nine separate focusing points to lock onto subjects fast and makes it so easy to get the shot you want. As well as Manual Focus there are three auto-focus modes to choose from: One-Shot AF, ideal for static subjects such as portraits and landscapes; AI Servo, great for moving subjects and keeps following the subject with predictive tracking until you take the shot; and AI Focus, which switches from One Shot to Servo when movement is detected. The center, cross-type focus point operates flawlessly in lower-light and lower-contrast settings.

Choose your style
The EOS 500D allows you to change the look of your images by customising Picture Style settings for colour, saturation, sharpness and contrast, either in-camera or later with Canon's comprehensive software suite supplied. Six preset Picture Styles include Portrait, which provides a slightly sharp and crisp image with nice skin tones, Landscape, which emphasizes vivid blues and greens, and Monochrome to give you stunning black and white images. Canon also offers additional downloadable 'Picture Style Files' that can be installed into your camera for even more imaging options at your fingertips.

Professional Software
The EOS 500D allows you to shoot in RAW format and the Digital Photo Professional software which comes free with it enables high-speed RAW image processing, fast previewing for real-time image adjustment and support for sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color spaces. Because it is CMS (Color Management System) compatible, Digital Photo Professional allows for easy image layout and printing in Adobe RGB in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint and PictBridge printers.

A world of advantages from Canon technology
Canon's CMOS senser and DIGIC 4 processor
combine perfectly in the EOS 500D

In-built genius
The CMOS sensor lies at the heart of the EOS system. Indeed, Canon is the only camera manufacturer to produce their own sensor and years of imaging experience are borne out by the results - a range of sensors designed to perfectly match the performance requirements of each specific EOS model and superb clean detailed images with minimum noise.

The CMOS sensor's larger pixel sizes mean wider dynamic range for greater contrast and detail in shadow and highlight areas and a low-pass filter in front of the sensor suppresses the false colour and moiré that can affect high resolution digital photography.

It is extremely powerful and efficient so not only does it improve battery life giving you more shots per charge, but it also enables fast transfer of data to the processor allowing you to keep shooting continuously.

Power in your hands
Canon's latest generation of DIGIC processor, the DIGIC 4, is the brain of the camera and is responsible for the superb responsiveness of all EOS models. Faster and more powerful than it's predecessor, the DIGIC 4 processor gives exceptional performance and low noise at higher ISO speeds.

In the instant between your shot being taken and its appearance on the LCD screen, Canon's cutting-edge DIGIC technology, which was originally developed for Canon's Professional range, is racing to optimise your image.

DIGIC processors are able to analyse ultra-detailed image data gathered by the camera sensor then use this to swiftly reproduce the subtlest of tonal graduations and an exceptionally wide colour range.

When shooting in darker conditions, even if you are pushing the ISO to the limit, DIGIC processing applies sophisticated Noise Reduction algorithms - helping to eliminate graininess and preserve detail. The speed of DIGIC also means less processing time for long battery life and fast start-up times.

EF & EF-S Lenses
Over 60 years of experience give Canon an inherent advantage when it comes to lens manufacture. EOS digital SLRs are backed up by the world's most comprehensive system of interchangeable lenses. From the 15mm ultra wide angle to 800mm super telephoto, the 60+ lenses in the EF series cover all possible shooting requirements.

Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L Series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabiliser technology is featured in selected lenses to minimise the effect of camera shake.

Extend your lighting capabilities
Mastering flash photography can take a lifetime but Canon's extensive range of Speedlites, can make it simple to get great results. These flash head units can be used on or off camera to open up a range of creative possibilities. You can use them in situations where there would otherwise not be enough light or as a fill-in flash to change your daylight pictures dramatically.

The Speedlite range is compatible with all EOS cameras and includes a choice of three standard models and two models for specialist macro use.

The self cleaning unit combats dust using
ultrasonic vibrations

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
This is not a stand-alone feature but a built-in system to minimize the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images - particularly appreciated by those photographers who need to change lenses frequently and in dusty environments.

Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit - A key element of minimising dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this EOS cameras feature a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. A collar positioned around the sensor then collects the loosened dust. In addition to this a special coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter actually causes it to repel dust.

Dust Delete Data Detection - Any dust that still remains on the front of the sensor can be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analysed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

iFCL light metering for better results in difficult lighting situations

To complement the 9-point AF system, the EOS 600D features a 63 zone dual-layer sensor. By taking into account the colour and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this system delivers an incredible level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations. Since the metering sensor has a colour measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimised; the EOS 600D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as a theatre or concert hall. This makes the EOS 600D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

The EOS 60D’s 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle monitor not only flips 175° and rotates 270° - it also has an incredible 1,040k dot resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio, offering incredible flexibility of shooting without compromising on quality. So whether you’re shooting across a crowd or from ground-level, you’ll capture the scene perfectly every time. Plus, the EOS 60D’s anti-reflective, water-repellent coating makes for easy viewing in bright light and from a variety of angles.

With Live View it's easy to magnify any part of your scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus and you can even choose a grid overlay - perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight.

Live View also provides three Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, Live Mode and Face Detection Live. Quick mode uses the camera's standard AF system and is great for capturing action or for shooting in low light. Live mode is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and Face Detection Live optimises the focus based on the faces it detects in the frame, making it easy to capture fast, spontaneous portraits.

The EOS 60D offers you the freedom to go beyond stills with Full HD (1080p) movie capture. With manual control to adjust exposure and focus, selectable frame rates, and 7x zoom Movie Crop, you can shoot stunning and creative high quality movie footage in addition to images. And what's more, there's no need to choose: you can capture both at the same time.

The camera has a built-in mono microphone with wind cut filter and a stereo mini-jack for an external microphone, enabling you to adjust sound recording level and ensure the audio matches the visual quality of the video. Plus, it’s easy to view and share your movies and stills thanks to an HDMI connection, which allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.

Superior In-Camera RAW processing

With the EOS 60D, PC post-processing is no longer limited to the PC. The camera’s powerful DIGIC 4 processor supports a host of advanced features, allowing you to process your images in-camera. So if you’re stuck for time on a shoot, you can easily adjust your photos during your journey home and send them straight to print, web or email as soon as you walk through the door. And because the EOS 60D saves your RAW files, you can edit a range of original settings such as brightness, contrast, white balance or distortion, then save them in a PC-friendly format.

You can also resize your images in-camera and rate them from 1 to 5, so that once transferred to PC your favourite shots will be recognised and prioritised by most third party software, including Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.
Image without and with iFCL Metering. Colours are clearer and more accurate
Complete accuracy with cross-type autofocus and iFCL Metering

The EOS 60D’s 9-point, all cross-type autofocus (AF) system provides swift and accurate focusing, making shooting fast-moving subjects even easier. It has an extra-sensitive centre point for lenses faster than f/2.8, allowing you to artistically employ a shallow depth of field for close-up shots such as portraits or more atmospheric scenes.

To complement the 9-point AF system, the EOS 60D also features Canon’s 63 zone Dual-layer light Metering sensor – which was first introduced with the award-winning EOS 7D. By taking into account the colour and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations, with no need for manual adjustment of settings.

The metering sensor’s colour measurement function minimises exposure and focus errors caused by different light sources, meaning the EOS 60D ensures stable exposure in situations where light can change, such as a theatre or concert hall. In scenes with extreme difference in brightness the camera also balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and ensures that exposure is not overly influenced by bright areas in the frame.

Powerful resolution and performance

The 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor promises superb quality images with impressive levels of detail, enabling you to scale your images to a magnification of 1.6x the focal length of the lens. Which gives you the freedom to creatively crop your shots or capture poster-size images in a variety of aspect ratios. Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 technology processes image information rapidly, providing outstanding colour reproduction and impressive continuous shooting speeds of 5.3fps in bursts of 58 full-resolution JPEGs. Plus, the camera’s ISO range of 100-6400 is extendable to 12800, producing remarkably clear images with advanced noise control, even in low light conditions.
The ESO 60D’s new design features one Multi Control Dial and dial lock

Highly intelligent design

The EOS 60D boasts a completely redesigned body, cleverly devised to enhance your shooting experience. It features an ergonomically enhanced, curved shape with a new button layout to make it quick and comfortable to change and customise your settings. And while the body is smaller than its predecessors, the grip size remains the same – giving you complete control at all times.

Quick Control Dial and Multi-controller have been cleverly merged into one Multi Control Dial, so you operate the multi controller even whilst using a battery grip. Many buttons are also now single function to make selection simpler. Plus, to make shooting even easier, a horizontal Electronic Level can be displayed in the viewfinder to help you capture landscapes with a perfectly level horizon.

The most frequently used controls are grouped together for easy access, and a dedicated Quick Control access button enables you to reach the most common settings instantly. Plus, the EOS 60D features the return of a reliable feature - the mode dial lock button.

SDXC and Eye-Fi card support

The EOS 60D incorporates dedicated support functions for SDXC memory cards as well as Eye-Fi cards. SDXC cards are for high capacity storage of up to 2TB while Eye-Fi are the first memory cards with their own Wi-Fi transmitter that allow you to effortlessly transfer pictures or videos directly from the camera to online sharing sites via the Eye-Fi server without the need for a PC. You can also send movies wirelessly to your own PC and customize not just where your pictures and movies are sent but also how you want them organised.

A world of advantages from Canon technology
The EOS 60D's 18MP CMOS Sensor & Dual DIGIC 4 Processors combine to give exceptional performance

The CMOS sensor's larger pixel sizes mean wider dynamic range for greater contrast and detail in shadow and highlight areas and a low-pass filter in front of the sensor suppresses the false colour and more that can affect high resolution digital photography.

Faster and more powerful than its predecessor, the DIGIC 4 processor gives exceptional performance and low noise at higher ISO speeds.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

This is not a stand-alone feature but a built-in system to minimise the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images - particularly appreciated by those photographers who need to change lenses frequently and in dusty environments.

Fast and Focused
The EOS 5D Mark II offers continuous shooting at 3.9 frames per second and when shooting JPEGs to a UDMA card, maximum burst is only limited by the card's capacity. It's wide-area Auto Focus (AF) system uses nine separate focusing points and 6 Assist AF points to lock onto subjects fast. As well as Manual Focus, the EOS 5D MkII offers three auto-focus modes: One-Shot AF, ideal for static subjects such as portraits and landscapes; AI Servo, great for moving subjects and keeps following the subject with predictive tracking until you take the shot; and AI Focus, which switches from One Shot to Servo when movement is detected. The center, cross-type focus point operates flawlessly in lower-light and lower-contrast settings.

Live View Function
The EOS 5D Mark II has a 3-inch Clear View VGA LCD screen offering 170° viewing angle so it is easy to use even in bright daylight.

Switching to Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on the LCD monitor. It's easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight. Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through a USB connection, and the included EOS Utility software.

In Live View Function you can action three Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, Live Mode and Face Detection Live. Quick mode uses the camera's standard AF system and is great for capturing action or for shooting in low light. Live mode is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and can be overridden by pressing the AF mode selection button. The target area for Live Mode AF is at the center by default, but it can be moved around most of the picture area with the cross keys on the back of the camera. Face Detection Live optimises the focus based on the faces it detects in the frame, making it easy to capture fast spontaneous portraits.

Customising the Portrait Picture Style lets
you shoot with confidence.

Choose your style
The EOS 5D Mark II allows you to change the look of your images by customising Picture Style settings for colour, saturation, sharpness and contrast, either in-camera or later with Canon's comprehensive software suite supplied.

Unlock your creativity
The EOS 5D Mark II offers a choice of shooting modes. Full Auto allows you to use the camera to 'point and shoot'; Portrait, which ensures the background is out of focus and the foreground is pin sharp. Creative Auto Mode (CA) is a cross between the Basic and Program Modes allowing you to adjust the Flash, resolution, drive mode and Picture Style. You can set aperture and exposure via a slider that's adjusted with the Quick Control dial.

For more control over your images you can choose from five Program Modes.

The different modes allow you to control
the look and feel of your images.
Click here for a larger image
In Program AE Mode both the aperture and shutter speed are controlled by the camera but you can select other settings: With Drive Mode you can select from Single Shot, Continuous Shooting or Self-timer; Metering Mode allows you to specify the area of the image you wish the camera to use to calculate exposure; and White Balance setting means you can determine what the camera reads as white to allow for your specific lighting conditions.

Aperture Priority AE Mode (Av) mode automatically sets the shutter speed, but allows you to control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture.

Shutter Priority AE Mode (Tv) automatically sets the aperture and you select the shutter speed enabling you to change the appearance of motion in your shots.

Manual mode allows you to control both aperture and shutter speed so you have total creative freedom with your shots - great for difficult lighting situations or capturing subjects with different effects.

Bulb Exposure Mode (B) enables you to take long exposure shots using a cable release and tripod. The shutter remains open all the time your finger is on the shutter button.

In these modes you can change your ISO speed. This is the measure of the sensor's sensitivity to light. Altering it allows you to modify the exposure accordingly and gives you more freedom to be creative with your shots in different lighting conditions.

You can also pre-program up to three user-defined Custom Modes (C1, C2, C3). Using a menu system you can store the camera set up, including ISO metering pattern, white balance, shooting mode and custom function sets, so that you can automatically reselect that set up simply by choosing the appropriate Custom Mode on the dial. A sports photographer may have favorite settings for motor racing, gymnastics and tennis for example. Setting these as Custom Modes makes switching between them quick and convenient.

Reliable and compatible
The EOS 5D Mark II's robust magnesium alloy body has shutter durability of 150,000 releases and environmental seals making it highly reliable and equally suited to location or studio work. It is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards for convenient storage options. An Optional Wireless File Transmitter with External HDD and GPS compatibility is available.

Professional Software
The EOS 5D Mark II allows you to shoot in RAW format and the Digital Photo Professional software which comes free with it enables high-speed RAW image processing, fast previewing for real-time image adjustment and support for sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color spaces. Because it is CMS (Color Management System) compatible, Digital Photo Professional allows for easy image layout and printing in Adobe RGB in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint and PictBridge printers.

Canon EOS 450D
Perfect for the amateur enthusiast
Ideal for the photographer who wants a combination of flexibility and creative options, the EOS 450D presents powerful Canon technology in a lightweight ergonomic body. The potent combination of 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor married with intuitive controls, 18-55mm lens and generous 3-inch LCD monitor with Live View Function, ensures ease of use, outstanding performance and the great image quality that EOS is so well known for.

Never miss the shot
The EOS 450D's instant startup, speedy Auto Focus and minimal shutter lag ensures you are always just a button press away from a great shot. With continuous shooting up to 3.5 frames per second in bursts of up to 53 large JPEGs or 6 14 bit RAW files it is easy to capture dramatic action shots and capture enough detail to print to A2 size even with cropped images.

Focusing made easy
The camera's wide-area Auto Focus (AF) system uses nine separate focusing points to lock onto subjects fast and makes it so easy to get the shot you want. Unlock your creativity
The EOS 450D offers a choice of shooting modes. Basic Modes control all the settings for you allowing you to concentrate on great composition.

As you become more confident you can experiment with five Creative Modes:

Av mode automatically sets the shutter speed, but allows you to control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture. By setting the extent to which the lens opens or 'aperture', you can control the portion of a scene that appears sharp in the image or 'depth of field'. A larger aperture will provide a shallow depth of field - sharp in the foreground with a blurred background - where as a smaller aperture will give a sharp picture throughout.

The different modes allow you to control
the look and feel of your images
Click here for a larger image

Live View Function
Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on the LCD monitor.

Originally developed for Canon's Professional range, Canon's DIGIC III processor is the brain of the camera and is responsible for the superb responsiveness of all EOS models.

In the instant between your shot being taken and its appearance on the LCD screen, Canon's cutting-edge DIGIC technology is racing to optimise your image.

From 15mm ultra wide angle to 800mm super telephoto, the 60+ lenses in the EF series cover all possible shooting requirements.

The Canon EOS 30D replaces the award-winning EOS 20D. It brings proven EOS technology to a new level, giving photographers an unbeatable photographic experience. The EOS 30D incorporates a host of new features with Canon's highly acclaimed 8.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC II Image Processor. The EOS 30D includes enhanced operational features such as a new 2.5-inch LCD monitor, true spot metering, a durable new shutter mechanism, and Canon's Picture Style pre-sets (Canon's in-camera image processing standard), all in an sturdy, magnesium-clad body. The maximum number of images in a folder is increased from 100 to 9,999, while the in-built flash has been upgraded to match the 100,000 shutter cycle durability, an increasingly important feature in the digital age. With all these new features the EOS 30D is truly perfection, refined.

Canon's CMOS sensor technology allows for a wide dynamic range with reduced noise.
Speed and image quality
The EOS 30D features Canon's award winning CMOS sensor technology, with large 6.4µm2 pixels for wide dynamic range with low noise. Any remaining fixed pattern and random noise is dealt with by on-chip noise-elimination circuitry. A low-pass filter in front of the sensor reduces false color and moiré effects, while an infrared filter suppresses red fringing caused by sensor reflections and fog. The camera features Canon's DIGIC II processor now found across the digital EOS range. DIGIC II maximizes speed and image quality by processing uncompromisingly complex color rendition algorithms, clearing the buffer at high speed.
The 30D's 9-point wide area AF system provides versatility in focusing.
Sharp, fast focus
The EOS 30D has a high-precision, 9-point wide area AF system that uses both normal and high-precision focus depending on the aperture and available light. The 9 focus points can be chosen automatically or manually-selected using the 30D's intuitive, thumb-operated multi-controller.
The 2.5-inch LCD display is viewable at angles up to 170 degrees.
A new level of clarity for review
The EOS 30D has a brilliant 2.5-inch LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels. Adopted from Canon's professional EOS SLRs, this monitor not only displays more information, it can also be viewed at a greater angle (170 degrees) than many conventional LCD monitors. The full-featured shot information screen not only provides an RGB histogram, it can display the AF frame used. Magnification has never been faster. Magnification zooms to the focus point rather than the center of the image to check exposure and critical focus. It is also simple to jump quickly in image intervals up to 100. Menus are accessed at the touch of a button and feature larger text that is easier to read. Whether changing color parameters, setting up custom functions, organizing folders or setting white balance, the EOS 30D helps photographers get to their information quickly, so they never miss a shot.

Every function optimized for fast RAW and JPEG capture
The EOS 30D is one of the fastest cameras Canon has ever produced. Incorporating the fast operation of the EOS 20D, the 30D allows users to specify high-speed 5 frames per second (fps) or a new low-speed 3 fps continuous shooting for more controlled shooting and/or to save space on the CF card. And it can capture up to 30 JPEG and 11 RAW (or 9 RAW + JPEG) files in one burst. Whether it's the 0.15-second startup time, the high-speed mirror drive, the nearly instant 65-millisecond shutter release lag time or the predictive AF focusing at speeds up to 5.0 frames per second, the EOS 30D will amaze and delight photographers who don't want to wait for their camera when they're ready to shoot.
Shoot continuously at 3 or 5 frames per second.
Direct printing with PictBridge compatible printers
The EOS 30D lets you print beautiful photos with minimum time and effort - directly from the camera. It's compatible with Canon's SELPHY Compact Photo Printers, desktop PIXMA Photo Printers, and even third-party PictBridge-compatible printers.

EOS: The system
One of the EOS 30D's greatest advantages is the EOS system: compatibility with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, EX-series Speedlites, and EOS accessories such as the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E1. (Wireless file transmitter and lenses not included--must be purchased separately.) For high-speed processing of lossless RAW images and complete capture-to-print workflow management, the EOS 30D also comes with Canon's latest Digital Photo Professional software.

Battery grip
To extend the EOS 30D's 750-shot (CIPA standard) battery life and increase handling options, the camera is compatible with the BG-E2 battery grip. (Not included; must be purchased separately.) The BG-E2 takes two Lithium-Ion battery packs for up to 2,200 frames or six AA batteries in the supplied BGM-E2 battery magazine. (Shooting capacity with AA batteries is lower when compared with the Battery Pack BP-511A.) For easy vertical shooting, the BG-E2 provides additional shutter release, main dial, AE lock/FE lock, and AF point selection controls.

Technologies Explained

Picture Style
Picture Style pre-sets simplify in-camera control over image quality. Picture Style pre-sets can be likened to different film types--each one offering a different color response. Within each easily selectable pre-set, photographers have control over sharpness, contrast, color tone, and saturation. The camera's factory default configuration is set to deliver immediately-usable JPEG images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image do not degrade the image in any way and can be revised with Canon's Digital Photo Professional software.

The six pre-sets include:

Standard: for crisp, vivid images that don't require post-processing
Portrait: optimizes color tone and saturation and weakens sharpening to achieve attractive skin tones
Landscape: for punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to give a crisp edge to mountain, tree, and building outlines
Neutral: ideal for post-processing
Faithful: adjusts color to match the subject color when shot under a color temperature of 5200K
Monochrome: for black and white shooting with a range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red, and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple, and green)
The User Defined pre-set can be used to store up to three customized pre-sets, or any of the pre-sets available for download from Canon's web site.

DIGIC II
Now found across the EOS range, DIGIC II is a purpose-built, dedicated image processor responsible for the high speed calculations necessary in order to providing exceptionally accurate color reproduction in real time. Canon's second generation imaging engine, DIGIC II performs the duties of a number of separate processing units to speed processing, save space, and optimize battery life.

To avoid the trade off faced by other manufacturers between camera responsiveness and image quality, Canon has created a processor so fast it can read, process, compress, and write image data back to the buffer between exposures. This allows for longer continuous bursts at maximum frame rates before the buffer fills. Moreover, each image can be subjected to the full complex processing algorithms required in order to deliver superb image quality.

CMOS
Canon's award winning CMOS technology is one of the company's key competitive advantages. With noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site, Canon's CMOS sensors have lower noise and lower power consumption characteristics than CCD sensors.

CCD sensors use a bucket relay system to transfer each pixel's accumulated electrical charge to a corresponding gutter. The operation is time consuming and draws considerable power, which limits battery life and generates unwanted heat, further increasing noise and lowering image quality.

By contrast, signal conversion in Canon's CMOS sensors is handled by the individual amplifiers at each pixel site. Unnecessary charge transfer operations are avoided, vastly speeding up the process of getting signal to the image processor. Noise generation is reduced and power consumption limited.

Digital Photo Professional Software
Digital Photo Professional software provides high-speed processing of lossless RAW images. Processing with Digital Photo Professional allows real-time display and immediate application of image adjustments, giving control over RAW image variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation, and color tone. The camera JPEG images can be recorded in sRGB or Adobe RGB color space, and the Digital Photo Professional application supports sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color spaces. An ICC (International Colour Consortium) profile attaches automatically to RAW images converted to TIFF or JPEG images. This allows faithful reproduction of colors in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. For improved efficiency, a set of image adjustments can be saved as a recipe and applied to multiple images.
Realise your photographic vision with the EOS 30D. Speed and precision in a tough magnesium alloy body, with access to over 60 EF lenses and the range of EOS accessories for unlimited creativity.
