The D3100 is designed for newcomers to D-SLR photography, especially young families who want to take beautiful pictures without worrying about complicated functionality. A range of automatic settings means the camera will do all the hard work much like on a compact camera: Live View with Scene Auto Selector selects the mode that best matches your shooting situation; Scene Recognition delivers sharply defined images by analysing the scene and optimising the camera settings immediately before the shutter is released; and Guide Mode will take you step-by-step through the process of how to get the picture you want.

The Guide to great photos

For the newcomer to D-SLRs, the intelligent, improved Guide Mode, as seen previously on the D3000, gives you step-by-step instructions of how to change the camera settings to achieve the shot you want. This means you not only get great pictures, but it helps you to understand how the shot was achieved so you can develop your photography skills more intuitively. You can even view sample images of what you can expect from each setting, for example if you change the aperture or shutter speed settings.

The 14.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor, new powerful EXPEED 2 processing engine and a wide range of NIKKOR lenses deliver excellent pictures with amazing detail wherever you are and whatever you are doing. It has ISO 100-3200 sensitivity, with the versatility of effectively boosting ISO up to 12800. This significantly reduces the risk of blurred images when taking pictures of the most energetic children or an evening barbeque with all the family.

Full HD movies for all the family

Using the easy-access movie record button you can instantly switch to video mode on the D3100, and the D-Movie function allows you to record stunning full 1080p HD movie clips at 24fps with sound. The camera's large image sensor and high ISO sensitivity offers exceptional image quality, and the wide variety of NIKKOR lenses can be used to create cinematic effects. You can also make simple edits of your clips in-camera by deleting scenes or save specific frames as still images – nothing will be missed for the family photo album. The D3100 is also HDMI compatible so you can connect your camera to an HD television to view your movies in full HD from your sofa.

The 11-point autofocus system will make sure everything is in focus and ensures razor-sharp images to capture even the most fleeting of expressions or movements. Additionally, the bright viewfinder means you can see and focus precisely on the image you want to capture, quickly and easily. Live View with Scene Auto Selector is an intuitive and familiar way of taking pictures, useful for those who have only used a compact camera, and makes it easy to compose images using the LCD monitor. Scene Auto Selector will select the best mode for the scene and subject you want to capture, and Fulltime servo AF (AF-F) mode keeps subjects in focus without the need to press the shutter release button. Live View will also recognise as many as 35 faces at a time and even if people in the frame move, the camera will continue tracking and focusing on them.

Don't miss a moment

The D3100 is the essential item for every family event or day out. The camera's comprehensive technologies and tough exterior will keep up with any outing, whatever you're doing . Its intuitive design with improved ergonomics means you'll have direct access to shutter release, Live View and movie modes making it really easy to use, and its compact size and lightweight body (weighing only 455 g / 1lb) makes the D3100 the ideal camera to pack and carry around for all those unmissable moments.

Feature Guide - a first for EOS cameras

To get the best out of any SLR, an understanding of the camera’s features and technologies is essential. With the EOS 1100D’s new Feature Guide, newcomers to the digital SLR world are given a brief explanation of what each feature does and how you might best use it. For example, the Aperture priority AE feature is explained on the camera’s LCD screen saying “Adjust aperture to blur background (subjects stand out) or keep foreground and background in focus”. Once the feature is selected, the camera also provides onscreen help with step-by-step instructions as well as useful hints and tips.
Record full High Definition movies with stereo sound
High Definition movie-making

Boasting HD (720p) movie capability, the EOS 1100D does not just shoot video clips, it offers the enhanced image quality, smooth frame rates and adaptive exposure compensation you would normally find in a professional movie-making tool.

In addition to selectable frame rates, the EOS 1100D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large APS-C CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 Canon lenses provides a wealth of depth-of-field options, and it's all available at the press of a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording button.

It is easy to view and share your movies and stills too, thanks to an HDMI connection which allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.
Experiment with Creative Filters for artistic post-production effects like Miniature Mode which transforms normal landscapes into miniature look-alikes.

Unlock your creativity

With the new EOS 1100D creativity has never been simpler. You can add your own artistic touches and post-production effects with ease, without worrying about detailed settings or additional software. Basic+ allows you to add stunning ambience to a scene after it’s been shot. For example you can inject warmth to a sunset or brighten up your beach shots. Simply select Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sport, or Night Snapshot modes to find the ambience to suit your scene.

Further creativity can be achieved using the Creative Auto Mode. This setting allows you to make image adjustments, such as aperture or shutter speed, through an easy-to-understand navigation screen on the camera's LCD menu, allowing you to 'blur backgrounds’ or make exposures 'darker' or 'brighter'. These simple image options allow photographers to experiment with image exposure options while still managing to shoot in an automatic mode.
The different modes allow you to control the look and feel of your images

Get more hands-on with Creative Modes

As you become more confident you can also experiment with five Creative Modes:

Av mode automatically sets the shutter speed, but allows you to control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture. By setting the extent to which the lens opens (‘aperture’), you can control the portion of a scene that appears sharp in the image (‘depth of field’). A larger aperture will provide a shallow depth of field (sharp in the foreground with a blurred background) whereas a smaller aperture will give a sharp picture throughout.

Tv mode automatically sets the aperture and you select the shutter speed. This enables you to change the appearance of motion in your shots.

In Program Mode both the aperture and shutter speed are controlled by the camera but you can select other settings: with Drive Mode you can select from Single Shot, Continuous Shooting or Self-timer; Metering Mode allows you to specify the area of the image you wish the camera to use to calculate exposure.

Manual Mode allows you to control both aperture and shutter speed so you have total creative freedom with your shots - great for difficult lighting situations or capturing subjects with different effects.

A-DEP Mode automatically sets your depth of field so you can be sure to capture as much or as little of the scene as you wish in focus.

All the Creative Modes allow you to change your ISO speed. This is the measure of the sensor’s sensitivity to light. Altering it allows you to modify the exposure accordingly and gives you more freedom to be creative with your shots in different lighting conditions.

Effortless operation

The EOS 1100D is the smallest and lightest Digital EOS model yet, weighing just 495g, and is ergonomically designed for comfortable handling. A large, bright 2.7” LCD monitor with 230,000 pixels and a viewing angle of 170 degrees makes it easy to preview, review and share your shots even when you are using the camera in bright sunlight.

Live View Function

Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on the LCD monitor. It’s easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines straight in your composition. Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through a USB connection and the included EOS Utility software.
The 9-point AF system, 63 zone dual-layer light meter and 3.7fps shooting means you’ll always get the perfect shot.

Focusing made easy

A wide-area Auto Focus (AF) system uses nine separate focusing points to lock onto subjects fast and makes it easy to get the shot you want. As well as Manual Focus there are three auto-focus modes to choose from: One-Shot AF, ideal for static subjects such as portraits and landscapes, AI Servo, great for moving subjects as it keeps following the subject with predictive tracking until you take the shot and AI Focus which switches from One Shot to Servo when movement is detected. The centre, cross-type focus point operates flawlessly in lower-light and lower-contrast settings.

Choose your style

The EOS 1100D allows you to change the look of your images by customising Picture Style settings for colour, saturation, sharpness and contrast, either in-camera or later with Canon’s comprehensive software suite, supplied with the EOS 1100D. Six preset Picture Styles include Portrait, which provides a sharp and crisp image with nice skin tones, Landscape, which emphasizes vivid blues and greens and Monochrome to give you stunning black and white images. Canon also offers additional downloadable ‘Picture Style Files’ that can be installed into your camera for even more imaging options at your fingertips.

Professional Software

The EOS 1100D allows you to shoot in RAW format and the Digital Photo Professional software which comes free in-box, enables high-speed RAW image processing, fast previewing for real-time image adjustment and support for sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB colour spaces. Because it is CMS (Colour Management System) compatible, Digital Photo Professional allows for easy image layout and printing in Adobe RGB in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint and PictBridge printers.

Power in your hands

Canon's latest generation of DIGIC processor, the DIGIC 4, is the brain of the camera and is responsible for the superb responsiveness of all EOS models. Faster and more powerful than its predecessor, the DIGIC 4 processor gives exceptional performance and low noise at higher ISO speeds.

In the instant between your shot being taken and its appearance on the LCD screen, Canon's cutting-edge DIGIC technology, which was originally developed for Canon's Professional range, is racing to optimise your image.

DIGIC processors are able to analyse ultra-detailed image data gathered by the camera sensor then use this to swiftly reproduce the subtlest of tonal graduations in 16 bit and an exceptionally wide colour range.

When shooting in darker conditions, even if you are pushing the ISO to the limit, DIGIC processing applies sophisticated Noise Reduction algorithms - helping to eliminate graininess and preserve detail. The speed of DIGIC also means less processing time for long battery life and fast start-up times.
With over 60 Canon lenses to choose from you'll never be short of creative options.

Powerful resolution and low light performance

The EOS 550D's 18.0 MP APS-C CMOS sensor performs outstandingly in low light and produces images with incredibly low noise. Focusing made easy

A wide-area Auto Focus (AF) system uses nine separate focusing points to lock onto subjects fast and makes it so easy to get the shot you want. As well as Manual Focus there are three auto-focus modes to choose from: One-Shot AF, ideal for static subjects such as portraits and landscapes; AI Servo, great for moving subjects and keeps following the subject with predictive tracking until you take the shot; and AI Focus, which switches from One Shot to Servo when movement is detected. The center, cross-type focus point operates flawlessly in lower-light and lower-contrast settings.

iFCL Metering for better results in difficult lighting situations

To complement the 9-point AF system, the EOS 550D features a new, 63 zone dual-layer sensor. By taking into account the color and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations. Since the metering sensor has a colour measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimised; the EOS 550D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 550D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

Live View Function

Live View is a real-time visual feed, which enables you to view your subjects directly on the LCD monitor, a great help when shooting from awkward angles. It's easy to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. You can even choose a grid overlay, perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight. Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through a USB connection, and the included EOS Utility software.

In Live View Function you can action two Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, which uses the camera's standard AF system (great for capturing action or for shooting in low light) and Live mode, which is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and can be overridden by pressing the AF mode selection button. The target area for Live Mode AF is at the center by default, but it can be moved around most of the picture area with the cross keys on the back of the camera.

Engineered durability

Tested on fully assembled cameras, the shutter mechanism assembly has been proven for 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The ruggedly constructed D300S employs a strong yet lightweight magnesium alloy for its exterior cover, chassis and mirror box, as well as for the cover of the optional Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10. The camera also offers comprehensive countermeasures at key points to combat invasive moisture and dust.

Easy-to-access Live View mode

Live View function, activated by pressing the dedicated Live View button, makes it easy to shoot while composing on the LCD monitor. In Handheld mode, which allows you to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting, TTL phase-detection AF using 51 AF points is activated. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects. It allows contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame.

Quiet Shutter-release mode for non-intrusive shooting

By selecting "Q" on the release mode dial, photographers can opt to substantially reduce the sound of the camera's mirror-down during shooting. This is particularly useful when shooting in restrictive conditions such as when photographing wildlife.

Active D-Lighting for smooth tone reproduction in high-contrast lighting

By localising tone control, Active D-Lighting accurately restores the details in shadows and highlighted areas which are often lost in high-contrast lighting situations. Simply choose the appropriate setting — auto, extra high, high, normal, low or off — prior to shooting. For further options that will help you achieve your desired tone, the D300S also allows you to bracket your pictures with varying strength levels, for up to five frames, perfect for difficult lighting situations or if you don't have the time or experience to select just one Active D-Lighting setting.

Picture Control: Customise the visual style of your images

Nikon's Picture Control enables you to create the pictures you envisage, quickly and easily, by making specific selections and adjustments to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. And with other Picture Control-compatible cameras, as long as the settings are the same, you're able to obtain the same picture tone. The D300S offers four preset Picture Control options — Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. You can also download two additional presets, Portrait and Landscape, from the Nikon website.

Built-in flash with 16mm lens coverage

With a guide number of approx. 17/56 (m/ft., ISO 200, 20°C/68°F) and 16mm lens coverage — wider than the 18mm of the D300 — the high-performance built-in flash supports Nikon's original i-TTL flash control that evaluates flash exposure with greater precision for exceptional results. Compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, the built-in flash controls up to two groups of remote units as a master/commander in Advanced Wireless Lighting.

Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 (optional)

With the new EOS 60D creativity has never been simpler. You can add your own artistic touches and post-production effects with ease, without worrying about detailed settings or additional software. Basic + allows you to add stunning ambience to a scene after it’s been shot – to allow you to inject warmth to a sunset or brighten up your beach shots. Simply select Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sport, or Night Snapshot modes to find the ambience to suit your scene.

For a truly unique take on photos or themed collections, take advantage of the camera’s brand new range of Creative Filters for artistic post-production effects. Choose from Grainy Black and White for reportage style images, use Soft Focus to easily smooth skin tone, or experiment with Toy Camera Effect or Miniature Effect to add a different feel to your shots. They’re all applied in-camera so there’s no need to worry about changing lenses. The EOS 60D even allows you to select the best aspect ratio for your subject before shooting, meaning you spend less time post-processing and more time enjoying your beautiful shots. Choose from ratios of 1:1, 16:9 and 4:3 in addition to the standard 3:2.

Advanced flexibility from an industry-leading Vari-angle LCD
Capture any angle with a 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle monitor

The EOS 60D’s 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle monitor not only flips 175° and rotates 270° - it also has an incredible 1,040k dot resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio, offering incredible flexibility of shooting without compromising on quality. So whether you’re shooting across a crowd or from ground-level, you’ll capture the scene perfectly every time. Plus, the EOS 60D’s anti-reflective, water-repellent coating makes for easy viewing in bright light and from a variety of angles.

With Live View it's easy to magnify any part of your scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus and you can even choose a grid overlay - perfect for keeping vertical or horizontal lines in your composition straight.

Live View also provides three Auto Focus (AF) modes: Quick mode, Live Mode and Face Detection Live. Quick mode uses the camera's standard AF system and is great for capturing action or for shooting in low light. Live mode is a contrast-based AF system that reads the sharpness of subjects right from the imaging sensor, and Face Detection Live optimises the focus based on the faces it detects in the frame, making it easy to capture fast, spontaneous portraits.

Creativity at every angle with HD movie capture

The EOS 60D offers you the freedom to go beyond stills with Full HD (1080p) movie capture. With manual control to adjust exposure and focus, selectable frame rates, and 7x zoom Movie Crop, you can shoot stunning and creative high quality movie footage in addition to images. And what's more, there's no need to choose: you can capture both at the same time.

The camera has a built-in mono microphone with wind cut filter and a stereo mini-jack for an external microphone, enabling you to adjust sound recording level and ensure the audio matches the visual quality of the video. Plus, it’s easy to view and share your movies and stills thanks to an HDMI connection, which allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV.

Superior In-Camera RAW processing
Rate your images for instant recognition by most third party software
Click here for a larger image
With the EOS 60D, PC post-processing is no longer limited to the PC. The camera’s powerful DIGIC 4 processor supports a host of advanced features, allowing you to process your images in-camera. So if you’re stuck for time on a shoot, you can easily adjust your photos during your journey home and send them straight to print, web or email as soon as you walk through the door. And because the EOS 60D saves your RAW files, you can edit a range of original settings such as brightness, contrast, white balance or distortion, then save them in a PC-friendly format.

You can also resize your images in-camera and rate them from 1 to 5, so that once transferred to PC your favourite shots will be recognised and prioritised by most third party software, including Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.
Image without and with iFCL Metering. Colours are clearer and more accurate
Complete accuracy with cross-type autofocus and iFCL Metering

The EOS 60D’s 9-point, all cross-type autofocus (AF) system provides swift and accurate focusing, making shooting fast-moving subjects even easier. It has an extra-sensitive centre point for lenses faster than f/2.8, allowing you to artistically employ a shallow depth of field for close-up shots such as portraits or more atmospheric scenes.

To complement the 9-point AF system, the EOS 60D also features Canon’s 63 zone Dual-layer light Metering sensor – which was first introduced with the award-winning EOS 7D. By taking into account the colour and luminosity surrounding chosen AF points, this new system delivers an entirely new level of accuracy for better results even in difficult lighting situations, with no need for manual adjustment of settings.

The metering sensor’s colour measurement function minimises exposure and focus errors caused by different light sources, meaning the EOS 60D ensures stable exposure in situations where light can change, such as a theatre or concert hall. In scenes with extreme difference in brightness the camera also balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and ensures that exposure is not overly influenced by bright areas in the frame.
An extendable ISO range of 12800 produces beautifully clear images in low light

Powerful resolution and performance

The 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor promises superb quality images with impressive levels of detail, enabling you to scale your images to a magnification of 1.6x the focal length of the lens. Which gives you the freedom to creatively crop your shots or capture poster-size images in a variety of aspect ratios. Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 technology processes image information rapidly, providing outstanding colour reproduction and impressive continuous shooting speeds of 5.3fps in bursts of 58 full-resolution JPEGs. Plus, the camera’s ISO range of 100-6400 is extendable to 12800, producing remarkably clear images with advanced noise control, even in low light conditions.
The ESO 60D’s new design features one Multi Control Dial and dial lock
Click here for a larger image
Highly intelligent design

The EOS 60D boasts a completely redesigned body, cleverly devised to enhance your shooting experience. It features an ergonomically enhanced, curved shape with a new button layout to make it quick and comfortable to change and customise your settings. And while the body is smaller than its predecessors, the grip size remains the same – giving you complete control at all times.

Quick Control Dial and Multi-controller have been cleverly merged into one Multi Control Dial, so you operate the multi controller even whilst using a battery grip. Many buttons are also now single function to make selection simpler. Plus, to make shooting even easier, a horizontal Electronic Level can be displayed in the viewfinder to help you capture landscapes with a perfectly level horizon.

The most frequently used controls are grouped together for easy access, and a dedicated Quick Control access button enables you to reach the most common settings instantly. Plus, the EOS 60D features the return of a reliable feature - the mode dial lock button.

SDXC and Eye-Fi card support

The EOS 60D incorporates dedicated support functions for SDXC memory cards as well as Eye-Fi cards. SDXC cards are for high capacity storage of up to 2TB while Eye-Fi are the first memory cards with their own Wi-Fi transmitter that allow you to effortlessly transfer pictures or videos directly from the camera to online sharing sites via the Eye-Fi server without the need for a PC. You can also send movies wirelessly to your own PC and customize not just where your pictures and movies are sent but also how you want them organised.

A world of advantages from Canon technology
The EOS 60D's 18MP CMOS Sensor & Dual DIGIC 4 Processors combine to give exceptional performance
Click here for a larger image
In-built genius

The CMOS sensor lies at the heart of the EOS system. Indeed, Canon is the only camera manufacturer to produce their own sensor and years of imaging experience are borne out by the results - a range of sensors designed to perfectly match the performance requirements of each specific EOS model and superb clean detailed images with minimum noise.

The CMOS sensor's larger pixel sizes mean wider dynamic range for greater contrast and detail in shadow and highlight areas and a low-pass filter in front of the sensor suppresses the false colour and more that can affect high resolution digital photography.

It is extremely powerful and efficient so not only does it improve battery life giving you more shots per charge, but it also enables fast transfer of data to the processor allowing you to keep shooting continuously.

DIGIC processors are able to analyse ultra-detailed image data gathered by the camera sensor then use this to swiftly reproduce the subtlest of tonal graduations and an exceptionally wide colour range.

When shooting in darker conditions, even if you are pushing the ISO to the limit, DIGIC processing applies sophisticated Noise Reduction algorithms - helping to eliminate graininess and preserve detail. The speed of DIGIC also means less processing time for long battery life and fast start-up times.
With over 60 lenses to choose from you'll never be short of creative options

EF & EF-S Lenses

Over 60 years of experience give Canon an inherent advantage when it comes to lens manufacture. EOS digital SLRs are backed up by the world's most comprehensive system of interchangeable lenses. From 15mm ultra wide angle to 800mm super telephoto, the 60+ lenses in the EF series cover all possible shooting requirements.

Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L Series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabiliser technology is featured in selected lenses to minimise the effect of camera shake.

Extend your lighting capabilities

Canon's extensive range of Speedlites can make it simple to get great results with your flash photography and can be used on or off camera to open up a range of creative possibilities. The Speedlite range is compatible with all EOS cameras and includes a choice of three standard models and two models for specialist macro use.
The self cleaning unit combats dust using ultrasonic vibrations
Click here for a larger image
The EOS 60D has an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter making it easier than ever to make the most of them.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

This is not a stand-alone feature but a built-in system to minimise the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images - particularly appreciated by those photographers who need to change lenses frequently and in dusty environments.

Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit - A key element of minimising dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this EOS cameras feature a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. A collar positioned around the sensor then collects the loosened dust. In addition to this a special coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter actually causes it to repel dust.

Dust Delete Data Detection - Any dust that still remains on the front of the sensor can be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analysed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Now you're ready to view, shoot and record your subjects from unique perspectives. Try a high angle for overhead shots, waist level for candid Live View and movie shooting, or a low vantage point for a look from ground level. You can also place the Nikon D5100 on a tripod or other stable surface and still see yourself while composing self-portraits.
Create incredible movies — full HD (1,920 × 1,080 at 24/25/30 fps) movies and the D-SLR advantage

The Nikon D5100 delivers exceptional D-Movie performance with its full HD capability, full-time-servo AF (AF-F) and precise exposure control. In-camera movie editing and sound recording capability (stereo with optional microphone) are also provided. Together with D-SLR advantages like beautiful background blur, high ISO sensitivity performance and extensive NIKKOR lens compatibility, movie-making potential reaches impressive new levels.

Make your pictures and movies more fun and artistic — special effects mode

Your images should always have the look and feel you desire. One way to accomplish this is to set the mode dial to EFFECTS and choose from 7 different creative options such as Selective colour (Select up to three colours to show in the image, and the rest will remain in black and white), colour sketch and Miniature effect. You can take advantage of these stunning effects while you shoot.

Captures your subject precisely with wide area coverage — 11-point AF system

The Nikon D5100's 11 focus points, including a crosstype sensor, widely cover the frame and capture the subject sharply. When using 3D-tracking (11 points) mode, the camera works together with the Scene Recognition System to keep your main subject in focus even if the composition changes.

Image quality in a class of its own — image sensor with 16.2 effective megapixels and EXPEED 2 image processing engine

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the Nikon D5100 delivers outstanding image quality.

Clean and clear images, even in low light

The Nikon D5100 provides all the technologies you need to achieve excellent results even when available light is scarce. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range from 100 to 6400 (extendable to 25600 in Hi2 setting) with reduced noise. This enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Even handheld shots and full HD movies come out looking great in low light.

Exquisite detail in both highlights and shadows — HDR (High Dynamic Range)

When shooting extreme contrasts such as sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render both textures equally. Not any more. With the HDR setting, the Nikon D5100 takes two shots within a single shutter release: one overexposed and one underexposed. The camera then combines the two images to reveal an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer colour gradation than ever before (Recommended to use a tripod).
If the contrast in your shooting
scenario is extremely high and you
want detail throughout the entire
range, HDR is the right choice.

Balancing light and shade beautifully — Active D-Lighting

Useful in a variety of situations, Active D-Lighting automatically renders the highlights and shadows of high-contrast scenes so that they appear more like how they are perceived by the human eye. Optimised camera settings at your fingertips — 16 Scene Modes

The Nikon D5100 has Scene Modes that match a diverse range of scenes. The five most popular modes can be found on the mode dial, while others can be selected by setting the dial to SCENE and rotating the command dial. If you are shooting still pictures using Live View with Auto or Auto (flash off), Scene Auto Selector (when using AF) will automatically select the most appropriate Scene Mode, choosing from Portrait, Landscape, Close up, and Night portrait. Leave it up to the Nikon D5100 to deliver optimum results, leaving you more time to concentrate on the shot.
